The Bible includes the life story and teachings of Jesus, as well as many stories of people encountering God. It is a rich environment in which to hear from Him, and a vital resource for anyone wishing to be a disciple of Jesus.

Where to begin?

If you are new to the Bible it can be hard to know where to start, after all the Bible is made up of 66 different books, written at different times, in different styles, for different audiences. We would recommend starting with one of the ‘Gospels’ that tell the Good News about Jesus and His Kingdom. There are 4 to choose from:

  • Matthew

    Written to an audience who were familiar with Jewish history, and the promises God had made to them to send the Messiah - the rescuer, deliverer, saviour.

  • Mark

    Focuses on what Jesus did and taught in the final years of his earthly life. (e.g. Mark skips the Christmas story.)

  • Luke

    Written by a doctor for a Roman official, to give him an orderly account of everything relating to Jesus.

  • John

    Written by arguably Jesus’ closest friend. It has a distinct style and is explicitly written that you would believe in Jesus and have life in his name.

    Acts is the second of Luke’s volumes and describes how the works of Jesus were continued through his disciples.
